Costumes of Brittany on National Geographics

Flag_of_BrittanyWhile wandering the web today, I came across a very interesting set of images on the National Geographic website. It contained images of different traditional Brittany attire for woman.

Why would I find this interesting? Well, Brittany is one of the seven Celtic nations. It falls in the north-west of France, just across the English Chanel from Cornwall.  The culture of Brittany has other similarities to their Northern neighbors, such as language (Breton comes from the same root language as Cornish and Welsh) and dance. If you take the time to check traditional Welsh, Cornish, Breton and Galician dance, they use a lot of very similar movements and the music uses similar strains and instruments.

This brief gallery shows us another facet of Celtic life that we can sometimes forget about. Here are just a few of my favorites of these images by Charles Fréger (Sorry, I can’t link directly to the images, you’ll have to scroll through the gallery to get to the full size):

Please, if you have a moment, check out this beautiful work. I know I enjoyed this stroll through traditional attire.
